Quarter Time!

We are learning about quarters this week. First we folded paper into quarters. We found three different ways to fold our rectangles into quarters so that we have four pieces the same size. Keep an eye out for our quarter art......

Halves!

We had so much fun this morning in maths time. We had lots of different activities to do as we are learning about halves. Ask us about fair sharing at home and let us cut your veges,
fruit and sandwiches in half for practice!

Famous Author Visits

We were so lucky today to have a famous New Zealand author and illustrator visit our school.
This afternoon Gavin Bishop read to us 4 of his stories and answered questions about himself. His books have the coolest illustrations! We are lucky enough to have quite a few of them at our school already, but he showed us some new ones today. It was lots of fun to have a real author show us his work!

Merit and spelling awards

Well done to these three superstars who were awarded merit awards at assembly today. Keep up the hard work guys!

All of these amazing spellers were awarded a spelling certificate today for getting 1 or no words wrong in their spelling tests over the last two terms. Tino pai you 7, keep up the fabulous hard work you are obviously putting in with your weekly spelling homework.

Zatori's pumpkin muffins!

Yummy! We were so lucky to have lovely pumpkin muffins for morning tea. Thank you to Zatori's mum, Mrs Robertson and Miss Z loved them!

Seed packets

After designing our pumpkin seed packets we waited for our seeds to dry out. Today we put the correct seeds in our packets and they have gone home so we can plant them in our gardens later in the year. Miss Z has lots more in the class if any keen gardeners want extra......

Pumpkin seeds!

After our massive pumpkin chopping day, we were left with so many seeds! The children of Room 19 have designed seed packets for their favourite pumpkin and when the seeds have dried out, they will put them into their packets. Then the children can plant these when the weather warms up.
Until then we are playing with the seeds and turning them over until they are dry!

Nature Hunt

To finish our inquiry topic this term which was the environment, we joined up with Room 10 today to go on a nature hunt in our school environment.
We all made wee baskets which had items listed on each side. The idea was to set off through the school and find as many of the items as we could in a given amount of time. It really helped us to know our environment well!
Some of us nearly got all the items.
We are going to bring these baskets home. It would be cool to try and do the nature hunt again in our home environment.

Pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins......

We had so much fun cutting up our 15 pumpkins this week.  It was messy! We had seeds and pulp everywhere! We wanted to save our seeds, so we can put them into the seed packets we designed.

After we had separated the seeds from the middle, we all took two pieces of pumpkin and went to the staffroom. Miss Z helped us put the pieces into the oven so they would be all soft.  In the afternoon Ziggy's mum and Aimee's mum helped us scrape the pumpkin off the skin.

Miss Z added some chicken stock, garlic and onions and mixed all the ingredients together to make yummy soup.

On Tuesday we had a pumpkin soup party! We invited our families and shared our  pumpkin art, singing, drama and pumpkin research. Then we ate  our pumpkin soup with them.  It was delicious!

Keep an eye out for our seeds this week, we can plant them when the weather gets warmer, then we can grow lots more pumpkins!

Learning on the iPads

On Friday we used the iPads in small groups to learn a new application called book creator.
It allows us to create our own electronic book with pictures and text.
We loved having a go at this and hope to use it regularly in class to summarise books we've read.
